McSweeney's Quarterly Concern:
McSweeney's began in September 2000 as a literary journal, edited by Dave Eggers, that published only works rejected from other magazines. But after the first issue, the journal began to publish pieces primarily written with McSweeney's in mind. Soon after, McSweeney's attracted works from some of the finest writers in the country, including David Foster Wallace, Ann Cummins, Rebecca Curtis, Rick Moody, Judy Budnitz, Heidi Julavits, Jonathan Lethem, William T. Vollmann, Michael Chabon, Ben Marcus, J.T. Leroy, and many new talents.
Today, McSweeney's has grown to be one of the country's best and largest-circulation literary journals with an expanding, loyal subscriber base and strong independent book store following.
Recent journals have appeared on bestseller lists in cities around the country and have won multiple literary and design awards, including stories selected for the Best American Poetry of 2000, Best American Travel of 2000, O.Henry Awards of 2001, and the Best American Short Stories of 2001. Design awards include AIGA 50 Books Award, AIGA/365 Illustration Award, and the 2002 Print Design Regional Award.
McSweeney's Books:
In its first eighteen months, McSweeney's Books has published eight books, including novels by Jonathan Lethem and Stephen Dixon, the stories of Lydia Davis and Ben Greenman, and the illustrated biblical remakings of David Byrne. We have a growing list of new books to be published this year, including works by William T. Vollmann, Canadian phenom Sheila Heti, artist Marcel Dzama and a new novel by Dave Eggers.
McSweeney's Web Component:
www.mcsweeneys.net is the very popular Internet element edited daily and maintained by our McSweeney's staff. This site offers original content, event listings, opportunities to buy books and other merchandise from us, and identifies the locations of McSweeney's 100 bookstores.

 Giraffes? Giraffes! Dr. & Mr. Haggis-on-Whey $24
|
For many years the scientific and educational community has wondered and worried about the possibility that semi-sane scholar-pretenders would find the means to put out a series of reference books aimed at children but filled with ludicrous misinformation. These books would be distributed through respectable channels and would inevitably find their way into the hands and households of well-meaning families, who would go to them for facts but instead find bizarre untruths. The books would look normal enough, but would read as if written by people who have eaten too many lead-based paint chips.
Well, sadly, that day is upon us. We offer to you the first in a proposed series of 377 reference books, all written by a couple, Dr. and Mr. Doris Haggis-on-Whey, married fifty years and now getting their chance to twist and tickle the brains of the impressionable.
"Giraffes? Giraffes!" is the first in the series, and puts forth the following novel theories: that giraffes were not part of any evolutionary chain, but came here from Neptune, by way of very long (but convenient and
fast) escalators; that giraffes are expert dancers, but they become angry if you ask them about their dancing; that giraffes control over 90% of what we see in mirrors; that the Giraffe Navy is as strong as ever, contrary to recent claims in the popular press.
This is a book to be feared. If you have young people in your life, keep it far away from them.
"Giraffes? Giraffes!" is a 9" x 12" hardcover reference book, with 64 lavishly-illustrated pages, and includes a set of giraffe trading cards carefully attached to the inside back cover. The cover is blue faux-leather, de-bossed with gold foil detail and a special 4-color illustration.
Doctor-approved for all age groups and highly recommended.
